Dublin City Council is setting up a task force to tackle the scourge of fireworks that is terrorizing neighborhoods across the city.

An emergency motion, which was tabled by Sinn Fein, was passed unanimously at last night’s council meeting.

The motion called for full powers to confiscate the illegal explosives by Gardai, who will also be part of a joint working group with city councilors and officials.

Sinn Féin councilor Daithi Doolan was “delighted” to receive the full backing of his fellow councilors.

He said: “Send a clear message that the time has come for those involved in buying, selling or distributing fireworks. Dublin communities have been terrified by fireworks since August.

“This is totally unacceptable and immediate action must be taken.

“We present the Emergency Motion tonight in an attempt to force a coordinated response to this terror.

“We need Dublin City Council, the gardai and youth services to work together to end the nightly fear of fireworks.”

The motion also calls for the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner for the Dublin Metropolitan Region to increase the garda’s resources, including overtime, to ensure rapid response to calls from the public.

Advisor Doolan added: “The Gardai must have adequate resources to respond quickly, using all the powers available to them.

“Too many calls from the public are received with apologies that the Gardai do not have personnel or cars available. This is unacceptable. Gardai cannot protect our elderly and vulnerable cheaply.”

There have been a number of shocking incidents related to fireworks in the city in recent weeks.

In one horrific incident, criminals set fireworks on fire before passing them through an elderly resident’s mailbox, while in another disgusting attack, a young mother was also thrown a blow while carrying her newborn baby.

A woman had to be treated in hospital for burns to her neck after a firework was thrown at her while walking through Rathfarnham.
