Dublin Airport has confirmed plans to introduce charges for picking up or dropping off passengers by car.
The new proposed drop-off and pick-up areas will operate in front of Terminals 1 and 2, but will not be introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A Dublin airport spokesman said the goal is to reduce the number of car trips to and from the airport and to encourage the use of public transport.
Louise O’Reilly, TD of Dublin Fingal’s Sinn Féin, said it could cause problems for many in the surrounding areas, as well as for travelers in Ireland who do not have direct public transport service to the airport.
“I have been contacted by constituents who are not very satisfied with this announcement. They see it as potentially leading to congestion because people instead of going to the airport will drop off passengers abroad.
“We also have a situation where there are large parts of the country and indeed the city and county of Dublin that do not have a direct bus or bus link to Dublin Airport.”
Meanwhile, rapid tests for Covid-19 could be introduced in Irish ports and airports by the end of the month.
Hiqa is currently reviewing the rapid test kits on the market to see if they are accurate enough.
