Dublin Airport plans to introduce new charges for people who pick up or drop off passengers by car.
The new areas proposed to drop off and pick up passengers will operate in front of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Works will begin shortly if the project receives approval from planning authorities.
A Dublin Airport spokesman said the new system aims to reduce the number of car trips to and from the airport and encourage passengers to make greater use of public transport.
The income generated will be delimited and “invested in a series of sustainability initiatives” at the airport.
He also confirmed that the new charges would not be introduced during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
Paid pickup and drop-off areas are already in use at other Irish airports, such as Cork and Belfast International.
A free option to drop off and pick up passengers will continue to be available through the use of a new dedicated area in the Express Red long-term parking lot.
A new 30-minute “reduced rate” parking period will also be introduced in the short-term car parks at Dublin Airport, which are located next to the passenger terminals.
Last year, almost a third of people (32%) used private vehicles to access the airport. Another 32% of passengers made their journey to Dublin Airport by bus, while 21% took a taxi.
Currently, private cars can drop passengers in front of both terminals at Dublin Airport, but cannot pick up people at these locations.
However, the airport said the system has been “abused by some for several years, with cars illegally stopping to wait for pickup or circling campus roads multiple times before finally picking up their party.”
The model for the new proposed payment system indicates that the time spent in the new toll booths, which will accept payments by toll card, card and cash, will normally be less than 60 seconds.
