Highlights from Dublin’s victory over Cavan

Dublin progressed to the Irish final after a comfortable 1-24-0-12 win over Cavan.

It’s been a roller coaster championship campaign, with the underdog giving up surprises in recent weeks. But, as the race for the Sam Maguire Cup returns home, Dublin is determined that there will be no more Cinderella stories in 2020.

There were questions surrounding the men of the capital before the championship, and many wondered if the change of direction or the departure of some big names would affect the team.

But Dessie Farrell’s charges meet again in another decisive match, after setting aside the challenge of Ulster champions Cavan.

Cavan started brilliantly, taking the lead early with impressive scores from Martin Reilly, Thomas Galligan and James Smith. But, after they were 0-3 apiece, Dublin turned up a gear and Cavan couldn’t match his opponents.

The Sky Blues made their dominance count, as Dean Rock helped them take a 0-7 to 0-4 lead on the first half water break.

The Dubs were fierce at the tackle, pushing Breffni’s men when they had possession.

Paddy Small, Con O’Callaghan and Ciaran Kilkenny raised white flags as Dublin established a 0-12 lead to 0-7 at halftime.

This year Cavan fell behind at halftime it was not uncharted territory. Mickey Graham’s charges had lagged at halftime in all four of his Ulster Championship games. In fact, the margin had been greater against Monaghan and Down.

But this proved to be a bridge too far for the kids back in 2020.

O’Callaghan, Fenton and Paddy Small kept the score going after the restart. And it would have ended as a competition in the 45th minute, if Kilkenny’s fierce shot had found the net. However, Reilly stepped back and parried the ball off the line and over the bar.

Thomas Galligan moved forward to add a goal up front, but it was little as Dublin advanced nine on the second breakwater.

To his credit, Cavan dug deep and scored three unanswered points.

However, when the game opened, Dublin tasted blood.

Philip McMahon fired a deflected shot. But moments later, they found the possibility of another triple and didn’t make the same mistake. Dean Rock threw a hand pass to the speedy Robbie McDaid, who passed Raymond Galligan.

From there, Dublin gave in to victory by 15 points. Cavan finished with 14 men, as Thomas Galligan received a second yellow at the end for a foul on Stephen Cluxton.
