More than € 1.1 million worth of suspected cannabis along with a firearm and € 100,000 in cash have been seized following a search operation in Monaghan and Louth.
Two people have been arrested.
The searches in both counties were carried out around 12 p.m. today, as part of an investigation targeting suspected organized crime.
Officers from the Garda National Office for Drugs and Organized Crime and the Garda Dogs Unit carried out the searches.
Cannabis herb with an estimated street value of 1,120,000 euros was seized, Gardaí said. They also seized a firearm, ammunition and 100,000 euros in cash, “which are suspected to be the proceeds of crime.”
A 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking, in violation of the provisions of article 15 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act of 1996.
Both persons are currently detained at Castleblayney Garda Station under section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
“Organized crime groups continue to operate despite the existence of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Deputy Commissioner John O’Driscoll, who is Head of Serious and Organized Crime at An Garda Síochána.
“However, the Garda Síochána pursues them with rigor and determination. It is this determination that has led to the success today, whereby the Garda National Office for Drugs and Organized Crime, assisted by the Garda Canine Unit, has located and seized a considerable quantity of drugs, a firearm, ammunition and cash suspected of the proceeds of crime.
“We continue to target those who cause the most harm in our community,” he said.
“Reducing the availability of illicit drugs and firearms that cause untold misery in our communities will remain our priority and we believe that today’s seizure will contribute to the disruption and possible eventual dismantling of certain organized crime groups that we continue to attack, build on other recent successes we’ve had. “
