Draw with Derry City lifts Finn Harps off the LOI base

A goalless draw against local rivals Derry City was enough to knock Finn Harps off the bottom of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table, beating Cork City.

Ollie Horgan will be very happy in a meeting of few opportunities.

Barry McNamee, the former Derry captain, featured in two of the best in the first half.

First, McNamee played Karl O’Sullivan from a choreographed move, but his delivery was spearheaded by Alexander Kogler.

Then McNamee pinched possession and pushed Kolger aside only for Eoin Toal to make an excellent tackle.

At the other end, Oluwaseun Akintunde nearly broke the deadlock for the visitors, but fired wide from just six yards after reaching the end of a Walter Figueira cross. The same player went off the mark early in the second half, with a shot that went wide.

In a northwestern derby by far due to the current situation and the sun and silence. Harps nearly won the sides’ previous meeting in March only for Adam Liddle to score a leveler in injury time.

Harps nearly broke the deadlock when McNamee slipped Kogler, but Peter Cherrie saved well on Derry’s goal. The home team pushed the most and Cherrie made a good save from Mark Russell, who clung to a sacking of substitute Tony McNamee.
