Dr. Tony Holohan has urged people to wear face masks “correctly and safely” and instead of visors.

The medical director of the Department of Health said the goggles do not offer the same “benefits” as masks, which provide “much better protection.”

He said it was particularly important for people in retail to wear masks and not visors.

He said: “The commitment to the spirit of public health councils shown by people across Ireland since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic is commendable.

“This includes wearing a mask where social distancing is difficult, in stores and on public transportation.

“However, it is also vital that they are used correctly and safely.

“Make sure you completely cover your mouth and nose with the mask.

“Remember, visors do not offer the same benefits as face masks.

“I want to particularly emphasize that it is very important that those who work in settings such as retail avoid the use of visors and instead wear face masks.

“Face masks offer much better protection, and everyone who can wear them should wear them.

“Wearing one prevents someone who doesn’t know they have Covid-19 from spreading it to someone else.

“They are a key element of our defense against this virus, in addition to staying home and avoiding meeting people outside of their home.”
