The medical director has asked the Irish to avoid pubs and restaurants with cases of Covid-19 on the rise.
Dr. Tony Holohan sent a message to the country this morning to try to keep cases low in the run-up to Christmas.
The doctor said to avoid meetings, stay away from pubs and restaurants and avoid social contacts.
The CMO tweeted: “Cases are increasing rapidly. We have few cases and deaths compared to the EU, UK and US. This is at risk now, just as vaccines arrive. To protect yourself and your loved ones : Stay home. Do not gather. Stay away from restaurants / pubs. Avoid crowds. Wear masks. Follow health advice. “
It follows 527 new cases of Covid-19 that were announced in Ireland on Saturday night as the situation continues to worsen.
Dr Holohan said Saturday night: “The numbers that we are seeing on all the key indicators of disease severity continue to give us solid reason for constant and constant concern.
“As we approach a week with an exceptionally risky intrafamily and intergenerational mix, remember to act responsibly. Start this weekend. It is never too late to cut your contacts, cancel plans or avoid a crowd.”
“Keep in mind that it may well be the link in a chain of transmission that ends with a vulnerable loved one contracting this dangerous disease. Stop that chain of transmission now, limit your movements today. “
New restrictions are expected to be introduced next week and the Cabinet will meet on Tuesday.
