Dr. Tony Holohan has issued a warning that he is “concerned” by the higher than expected number of new confirmed coronavirus cases tonight.

The latest figures released today by the Department of Health show that 456 more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Ireland, while six more people have died.

It brings the total number of infections here to 67,526 since the pandemic began.

Dublin is once again the worst affected region in the country, with 151 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Medical Director.

This is followed by Limerick with 38, while Cork, Donegal and Galway report 27 new infections each.

The remaining 186 cases are spread across 20 other counties.

And today’s spike has prompted medical director Dr. Tony Holohan to voice his concern following the higher-than-expected number of new cases.

Dr. Tony Holohan said: “Analysis of today’s data shows that the 5-day moving average of the number of cases has increased from 354 to 392. We have seen higher numbers in the last few days than we expected based on the Encouraging trends for the past three weeks.

“We are concerned that this progress is at risk.

“We have to remember that the virus is still very active in the community and we cannot lose our guard. NPHET will continue to monitor the situation closely for the next few days.

“We all need to focus on what we can do to stop the spread of this disease; wash our hands regularly, cover our faces, stay away from others, avoid crowds, limit our social network, know the symptoms, isolate ourselves, and contact a GP if we have them. Stay home and restrict our movements if you are a close contact from a confirmed case. “

Of the cases reported today:

  • 210 are men / 246 are women
  • 69% are under 45 years old
  • The average age is 33 years.
