The interim medical director responded to Tanaiste’s claims that Ireland should follow Belgium’s approach to the Covid-19 crisis before introducing measures.

In Belgium, health experts focus on hospital admissions, the number of people in intensive care and the total number of deaths before making recommendations – something that Leo Varadkar believes Ireland should do more.

But in response to comments, Dr. Ronan Glynn has said that NPHET takes all the same things into account.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Medical Director, Department of Health

“That is precisely what we do … we are concerned about critical care admissions, we are concerned about mortality, we are concerned about the effect on the overall healthcare system, we are concerned about the effects and vulnerable people all in the country, “he told Virgin Media News.

“The reason we are concerned about the increase in cases is that, in 2,3,4,5 weeks, we see the knock-on effect in terms of severity and impact of the disease …

“We are seeing that impact not just in older people or people with underlying conditions.

“We are seeing it in all age groups: in younger people and in older people.

“We had 32 deaths in September, at least seven of those deaths were in people under the age of 65. At least seven of those deaths were people with no underlying condition.”
