Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan has asked people to stop blaming victims in relation to people who violate public health guidelines.
Speaking at the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) briefing on Monday night, the nation’s top physician said he believes “we have framed too much as a country in a sense of guilt and trying to find the last person who has broken a particular guideline and trying to find, so to speak, a lamppost to hang them.
“We need to have more tolerance and acceptance that this is a very high standard of behavior that the entire population has maintained,” Dr. Holohan said at the press conference.
When asked by reporters about GAA players celebrating together on what was a momentous weekend for county teams, Dr. Holohan said it was “not a surprise” that teams that win big games “tend to celebrate”.
Recognizing that not everyone likes sports, Dr. Holohan said it was a very enjoyable weekend and praised sports organizations for conducting sports activities “in the safest way possible.”
Dr. Holohan’s comments come after crowds were seen gathering Friday and Saturday night in the center of Cork city, prompting arrests and sparking fury on social media.
