Sean Doyle, CEO and Chairman of Aer Lingus, will become the new CEO of British Airways.

In a statement this morning, IAG, which owns Aer Lingus and British Airways, said BA chief executive Alex Cruz will step down. However, he will remain as non-executive chairman of the airline.

Meanwhile, Donal Moriarty, Aer Lingus’ director of corporate affairs, will become the airline’s interim CEO.

A permanent appointment will be announced in due course, IAG said.

Sean Doyle worked at British Airways for 20 years before coming to run Aer Lingus almost two years ago. He will also assume the position of president of BA after a transition period.

IAG also said that Fernando Candela, CEO of LEVEL, joins the group’s steering committee in a new role as director of transformation.

Today’s changes were announced by the new CEO of IAG, Luis Gallego, after a month in office.

“IAG has proven to be one of the world’s leading airline groups with a portfolio of successful companies,” said Gallego, who replaced Willie Walsh.

“We are going through the worst crisis facing our industry and I am confident that these internal promotions will ensure that IAG is well positioned to emerge in a strong position,” he added.
