Donald Trump has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize following his efforts to negotiate peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The name of the US president has been proposed by Norwegian politician Christian Tybring-Gjedde, according to Fox News.
“By his merit, I think he has tried to create peace between nations more than most of the Peace Prize nominees,” Tybring-Gjedde, a four-term member of parliament, told the channel.
On Tuesday, a White House official announced that Trump will hold a signing ceremony on Sept. 15 for a groundbreaking Middle East deal that will normalize relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
As part of the agreement, announced at the White House on August 13 after what officials said were 18 months of talks, the Gulf state agreed to maintain normal relations with Israel, while Israel agreed to continue with plans to suspend its annexation. of the West Bank.
In 2020, there were 318 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Submissions must be made online and all nominees are discussed before a list of the most valuable and interesting is drawn up.
Tybring-Gjedde’s letter to the Nobel Committee praised the role of the US president in improving relations between the nations of the Middle East.
He wrote: “As other Middle Eastern countries are expected to follow in the footsteps of the United Arab Emirates, this agreement could be a game changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity.”
This is not the first time Trump has been nominated for the award.
In 2018, Tybring-Gjedde introduced his name after his summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The president of the United States did not win.
The Norwegian told Fox News that he is “not a huge Trump supporter,” but added that other people have won the award for doing much less.
