Two years ago, Galway lost his Ireland-wide launch crown to Limerick after a grueling two-game semi-final series against Clare.
Despite a belated manifestation of the Tribesmen in the final that closed the gap to some extent, Limerick deservedly held on to lift Liam MacCarthy for the first time in 45 years.
In tonight’s game on Sunday (RTÉ2 9.30pm), we revisit that year’s thrilling tied game against the Banner, which featured the one-handed Peter Duggan point and finished 1-30 each, and the replay, Galway outplayed by one point.
“Throughout the year, Galway started well and ran for great leaders, but he barely held it for any reason,” reflected Ireland’s winning manager, Cyril Farrell. “From the cruise, Galway held on to winning per point.
“They also had a replay in the Leinster final against Kilkenny. They led big and were caught and had to replay.”
“They (Galway) were winning, but they were so flat in the final and they only played for a few minutes near the end and they could almost have stolen it.”
“If they had defeated Clare the first day, they would have been cooler when they came in. But they were going from one game to another. Limerick was as cool as the daisies.”
“That final is one that will haunt them.”

The first game in the Galway-Clare saga on Saturday, July 28 was followed by an equally exciting classic in overtime between Limerick and Cork on Sunday.
“I remember walking around with supporters saying ‘Did we ever think we’d have a launch weekend like this?” Recalls Anthony Daly.
“It fits in with the entire year of 2018 and the success of the entire round-robin concept in the provinces and having the two semi-finals on the same weekend.”
