Singer Dickie Rock has threatened to give Johnny Logan “a shit box” after the Eurovision song winner claimed that the star of the show lived in a “fantasy world”.
The top two legends in Irish show business are at war after a weekend interview in which Johnny upset Dickie.
In the Irish Times article, Logan ranted after being asked about Rock, asking, “What would Dickie Rock know about being a musician? Dickie’s idea of an international tour was to have a concert in England. He bought a pub in Spain to be able to play there.
“We know Dickie in Ireland but we come out of Ireland and say” Dickie Rock “and people will think that you are talking about some kind of stone that you will find in a museum.
“I love Dickie, but he is a legend in his own head … he lives in a fantasy world.”
‘HUGGER’
Johnny 65 also claimed that he was struggling with social estrangement as he was a “hugger”.
An outraged Dickie said to the Irish Sun: “Give Johnny a hug? I’d give him a damn box. I am 82 years old. Even now I would give him a box. “
The Cabra-born artist was left scratching his head when Logan concluded the interview by saying his lifelong ambitions were “to keep my hair and survive Dickie Rock.”
Dickie told us, “I can’t understand it because I always got along very well with Johnny Logan. There have been no incidents.
“I praised the world and I praised everyone.
“Johnny seems to be ruining his own achievements a lot. Johnny must be very insecure. His career is mainly abroad and he is very successful.
“I am happy that the Irish know me. I am happy to be home and not have to leave to pursue success.”
And the Candy Store singer flatly denies a claim made by Johnny in the piece that he owned a pub in Spain.
Dickie told us: “I don’t have a pub in Spain. That is not true.”
Logan had also drawn a list of celebrities he had sung in front of the interview, including Pope John Paul, the Queen, Prince Charles, and Lady Di.
He added: “I was on tour with the Royal Symphony Orchestra. I’ve done the London Palladium about 20 times, Top of the Pops about 14 times. Make Dickie match one of those, you know?
But Rock replied: “I’ve done the London Palladium, the Royal Albert Hall. I’ve played Carnegie Hall. Johnny talks about playing for British royalty.
“Well, I have worked with the King of Ireland in Monaco, Michael Smurfit, at his inauguration to be the Irish Consul in Monaco. The Smurfit are Irish royalty.”
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Johnny had also criticized Dickie for not playing an instrument or writing any of his hits.
‘STUPID SIMPLE’
But Dickie replied, “That is just stupid. Frank Sinatra did not write his songs, Elvis did not write his songs. However, they were the most incredible artists of all time.
Maybe Johnny is unhappy deep in his heart? He had the looks. He was tall. He was a handsome boy.
“I told my wife Judy, if Johnny Logan had not been born in such a small country, if he had been born in the United States, it would have been another Elvis.” Dickie added: “There is no doubt, he has a great voice and a great personality.”
The showband star revealed how he had met Logan last year at the home of Dickie’s music director Eugene McCarthy.
He remembered from that meeting: “Johnny and I got along well.”
Dickie emphasized that while he and Johnny could have met face to face in Ireland when Logan first won Eurovision in 1980, he did not consider him a rival.
Dickie said: “I was always competitive with other singers and my biggest rival is a man named Red Hurley, with whom I have never had bad words. We get along well together and I respect him very much.
“I’m still acting too. I’m going to get married at Kilshane House next October. ”
The pensioner is under lockdown with his wife Judy at his Dublin home, and said he is taking three stairs at a time to help him maintain his fitness levels.
Dickie said: “A guy called and asked if he could book his wedding for me in Killarney in July 2021. I accepted immediately.
He said, “How long will they play for?” I said, “Two hours.” This guy was 30 years old, he seemed impressed with that, but I explained that singing is the blood of my life.
“It is very encouraging to receive calls like that, and he and his girlfriend will be having a great show next year.”
TRIP TO THAILAND
The showband star also recounted how he and his wife were almost stranded in Thailand just before closing when their flight to Ireland was canceled. Dickie had to shell out € 3,800 for replacement flights with a rival airline to bring them back to Dublin.
He explained: “It cost us a few recoveries, but it was worth it.
“We had dated Etihad Airways but on the day we were due back, they canceled all of their flights.
“We had to buy additional tickets from Qatar Airways, which took us home through Doha just in time.”
Since then, the couple have not left their home in leafy Donnybrook, Dublin, as their older children bring groceries to them every day. Dickie said: “It is the elderly who are at risk for the coronavirus, which could be me.
“But that is not going to happen because I am reasonably fit and I take the stairs three by three.
“That is the type of exercise I am doing, as well as gardening.
“We don’t have anyone to come clean or cook. We do it all ourselves and Judy, my wife, gives me the best food, so I am confident I will get through this.”
