Another glorious chapter was written in the enduring history of Dermot Weld, the pioneering coach who recorded a major first at Keeneland on Saturday by recording a first Breeders’ Cup win thanks to the heroine Turf Tarnawa.
It was also a huge rally hit for Colin Keane, the recently crowned champion rider in Ireland for the second time and a rider destined for stardom.
It’s easy to see why many feel this way given the way she got Tarnawa out from behind and she answered every one of his questions to beat Aidan O’Brien Magical’s iron mare with Channel Maker in third place.
A home bred to Aga Khan, Tarnawa has been brought in with all the patience and skill that Weld has become famous for – experience that means he remains the only European coach to win a stage of the US Triple Crown. – Go And Go landed the Belmont Stakes in 1990 – while Vintage Group helped it become a history maker in Australia through its 1993 Melbourne Cup heroics. A race it also won with Media Puzzle in 2002.
He has been trying in the Breeders’ Cup, as his 16 riders at the meeting show, but optimism seemed high. Tarnawa could be the one after crossing the Atlantic with two French from Group 1 on her CV and apparently in the form of her. lifetime.
Weld remained in Ireland, but his son Mark was present at Keeneland and said, “We are absolutely on the moon and there is nothing greater than this.”
“I am excited for His Highness the Aga Khan and his team and the people in Ireland. It saddens me that my dad is not here, but Covid has put an end to that.
“She is an extraordinary filly and we have had a wonderful trip with her. She is like a jet; she sees the runway and she goes. Dad has done an extraordinary job and deserves a lot of credit.”
Betfair and Paddy Power went 12-1 (out of 33) over Shamardal’s daughter who won next year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, though Ladbrokes was more impressed and ranks her as their 8-1 favorite with Love.
Keane, who only had his second ride in the Breeders’ Cup after Siskin in the Mile, saved absent rider Christophe Soumillon a moment, who should have ridden the four-year-old but was ruled out after testing positive for coronavirus.

He said: “These are very unfortunate circumstances for Christophe. Mr. Weld called me the other morning and told me what was going on and called me again this morning and said we really wouldn’t make a plan.”
“I rode her how I felt. She said it would be wonderful if I sat on her earlier because she is a filly that needs a little knowledge, but I spoke with Oisin Orr, who rides her at home, and she said it was very simple, that she relaxes and you can put it wherever you want.
“I’m very grateful to him and Mr. Weld for letting me ride her. It’s been a brilliant year. Siskin was a bit disappointing on the Mile, but it’s lovely to come home after this.”
The turf has been kind to European horses and the result returned to that feeling, Lord North claiming fourth for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori, with O’Brien’s other rider, Mogul, fifth.
