Department confirms 2 more deaths, 552 new cases

The Health Department has confirmed two more deaths associated with Covid-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,915.

There have also been 552 new cases of the virus. This brings the total number of registered cases in Ireland to 62,002.

As of 2:00 p.m. today, 330 Covid-19 patients are hospitalized. 47 of them are being treated in intensive care units.

There have been 17 additional hospitalizations in the last 24 hours.

Of the cases reported today, 275 are men and 275 are women.

63% are under 45 years old and the average age is 36 years.

173 of the current cases are in Dublin, 86 in Cork, 40 in Limerick, 30 in Donegal and the remaining 223 cases are in all other counties.

The national incidence rate of 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants has been reduced to 253.5.

In Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has reported eight more Covid-related deaths, bringing the death toll to 716.

685 new cases were also reported, from tests on 2,972 people.

There are 361 confirmed Covid-19 patients in the hospital, of which 48 are being treated in intensive care units.

The director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory has said that the suspension of testing for Covid-19 there this weekend due to personnel issues has not affected the overall testing capacity.

Speaking on RTÉ This week, Dr. Cillian De Gascun said that the suspension of testing at the NVRL did not influence the lower number of cases seen in recent days.

Dr. De Gascun said they will “be back to normal” in terms of testing at the NVRL starting Tuesday.

Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said that progress is being made in terms of suppressing Covid-19 in Ireland, but while the country is “on the right track”, it is still too early for people to ease your efforts.

Dr. Holohan said that the incidence of the virus was decreasing in younger people, yet it was still increasing in people over 75.

“We have more to do, but we are on the right track,” he said.

Dr Holohan also pointed out that Ireland is currently one of four EU countries with a 7-day reduction in incidence, and said that our national breeding number has dropped to about 1.

Meanwhile, the HSE CEO has warned the public of complacency in light of the low number of Covid-19 cases in recent days.

Paul Reid told RTÉ News that it was still early in the arena and he wanted to ask for a lot of caution.
