Deliveroo drivers ‘ram kid with bike and stolen bag’ in case of mistaken identity after clash with thugs during Dublin vigil

One boy recounted how he feared for his life when he was caught in the crossfire of angry Deliveroo drivers who had been attacked by thugs during a vigil by tragic colleague Thiago Cortes.

The 28-year-old Brazilian birthing cyclist was killed in a shocking hit-and-run at North Wall Quay on Monday and sadly died in hospital the next day.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Spire on Dublin’s O’Connell Street and walked to North Wall Quay in solidarity in honor of Thiago, but the peaceful march soon turned violent.

As previously covered on Dublin Live, a major clash soon broke out between mourners and a gang of thugs on Buckingham Street when hooligans threw what are believed to be fireworks at Deliveroo drivers.

But a young, innocent Dub heading to training was mistakenly attacked by Thiago’s grieving colleagues, who mistook him for one of the local thugs.

Odhran Moore was surrounded by some drivers who “grabbed him, hit him with the wheels and stole his training bag” in a terrifying case of mistaken identity.

Odhran’s mother told Dublin Live: “He was walking to his boxing club Corinthians BC Around 6:20 pm on Buckingham Street and a group of Deliveroo drivers mistook him for being part of the group of children who had thrown fireworks at them.

“They were very aggressive towards him and they grabbed his training bag with all his boxing gear and threw it into the food bin on the bike.

“Then they started ramming him with their front wheels and circling him so he couldn’t leave.

“They were yelling at him and they wouldn’t let him go and they kept coming out of him.”

The frightened mother understands why the delivery men are angry and that she is behind them, but in this case, they were the wrong child.

She added: “I know that drivers have a terrible life with some children and the working conditions are appalling.”

“It’s terrible that they killed their colleague, so it is understandable that they were angry, but in this case they targeted the wrong child to vent their frustration.”

But Sueann added that one of the drivers contacted her yesterday to apologize for the incident and had managed to get some of her things back.

She added: “I was contacted on Thursday by a driver who apologized on behalf of the other uninvolved drivers and made it clear that they did not support any violence.

“He said they assumed the fireworks were in the bag and that’s why they took it from him.

“He said he would do everything he could to get things back. He left the bag on a restaurant chair because he had to go to another job.”

“I thanked him by text message and he said he would do everything he could to get the rest back.

“The gloves, the hat and the wrapping material were in the bag, but the clothes and boots are still missing.

“I have been contacted by another man who works with the company and Odhran is sending him a list of what is still missing.”

“He is grateful to the kind driver who got some of his things back and hopes the rest will be returned soon and also wants to send his condolences to Thiago’s family and friends.”

Odhran’s mother added that she wanted to thank everyone who helped with the situation.

A Deliveroo spokeswoman said: “The Deliveroo spokesperson said: “Given the recent tragic events, the vigil in honor of Thiago Cortes was a very emotional event.
