David Alaba highlights Jurgen Klopp’s transfer dilemma as Didi Hamann makes unpopular Liverpool claim

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann says Jurgen Klopp’s team is unlikely to sign someone in January because the right option is not available.

The German also believes that David Alaba is unlikely to follow Thiago Alcantara to Merseyside from Bayern Munich, because the multi-talented Austrian would rather move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“I think [Alaba’s] The preferred destination was always Spain. I’m not sure if he wants to go to the Premier League and come to Liverpool, “Hamann told Stadium Astro.

“The fact that Liverpool are interested is not a surprise because Alaba has probably been one of the best center-backs, after Virgil van Dijk, for the last 12-18 months.

“But I don’t think Bayern Munich will let him go in January.”

Liverpool are linked to a plethora of center-backs but must balance factors such as availability, cost and the number of non-British spots they have available on their Premier League side.

Should Van Dijk be added to the Premier League roster for the second half of the season, Liverpool’s number of non-Brits would be reached unless someone else is eliminated.

“Dayot Upamecano from Leipzig, who is absolutely tremendous behind, Leipzig will not let him go,” Hamann added.

“I don’t think there is any chance that [Liverpool] get a central who will improve them over the next six weeks or years to come.

Speaking in more detail about Leipzig star Upamecano, whom Liverpool will face in February and March in the knockout stages of the Champions League, Hamann stressed that he thinks a season-end deal is more likely.

“I think [Upamecano] have a [release] clause [that would become active] in summer. These clubs will not be sold [mid-season]”Hamann said bluntly.

“[Klopp] You need to see what you can get in January. You look at players who are not in the Champions League, maybe a little lower, and I’m not sure that this is the type of player that Liverpool need to improve.

“If you have to play with Fabinho and Matip, yes, he has not kept fit, but maybe you can get eight or ten games out of him.

“[Jordan] Henderson can replace. Fabinho is hardly injured. I’d stay put for now.
