The Dáil will debate and vote tonight on a motion of censure from Sinn Féin in the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar.

Last week, Varadkar apologized for errors in judgment when he provided a confidential document agreed to with the Irish Medical Organization to a rival group of GPs in 2019.

Mr. Varadkar said that handing over the GP contract to the president of the National Association of Family Physicians through informal communication was not a good practice.

He said it was a “mistake” and one for which he accepted sole responsibility.

He said he regretted it and “regretted the controversy and anger his actions have caused.”

Government delegates have been told that everyone must be present for tonight’s vote, and now everyone is expected to back the Tánaiste.

After Varadkar’s apology, a Taoiseach spokesman, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, said he considered the issue had been “addressed” today.

Fine Gael’s coalition partners, the Green Party, said in a statement that it was “important that the lessons be learned and put into practice on how this new government does its business.”

The Dáil will first need to meet at Leinster House at 2pm before the proceedings move to the Convention Center.

In response to Sinn Féin’s motion of no confidence, the Government will present a counter motion stating that Dáil Éireann has confidence in Tánaiste.

Opposition parties have said that today’s proposal will cost taxpayers more because sessions at the Convention Center cost 25,000 euros a day, and they say the vote could be postponed until tomorrow.

Voting on legislation and motions must be done at the Convention Center to ensure Covid-19 guidelines are followed.

Before the Dáil begins, the Cabinet will meet for the first time where Foreign Minister Simon Coveney will brief his colleagues on the trade talks between the EU and the UK.

Coveney is likely to emphasize that the outcome of the US presidential election should not dilute the sense of urgency for businesses to speed up Brexit preparations.
