Cyclist dies after being hit by car in Dublin on Monday

The cyclist who was seriously injured when he was hit by a car in Dublin on Monday night has died.

Thiago Osorio Cortes (28), from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, was hit by a car on North Wall Quay at 10.30pm on Monday night.

Mr. Cortés was taken by ambulance to Mater Hospital in serious condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí said the car involved in the collision did not remain at the scene and was later recovered in Castleforbes Square a short time later.

It is understood that Mr. Cortés was delivering food on his bicycle for Deliveroo at the time of the collision.

The English Language Students Union of Ireland (ELSU) has organized a vigil that will take place in the tower on Wednesday evening, during which people are asked to bring candles and posters, to wear black or a uniform by Deliveroo.

The union has also requested that attendees wear masks and observe social distancing rules.

According to the vigil event page on social media, Mr. Cortés was married and leaves behind his wife, family and friends.

A Deliveroo spokeswoman said Mr. Cortés’ death was a “tragedy and a terrible loss.”

“Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the rider’s family and friends. We will do everything we can to ensure that the rider’s family is supported during this very difficult time, ”the spokeswoman added.

It is understood that Deliveroo is in contact with Mr. Cortés’s family and that the company provides insurance that will support the rider’s family.

Gardaí is requesting witnesses in connection with the incident, in particular for anyone who was in the area of ​​North Wall Quay, North Wall Avenue, East Wall Road, Sheriff Street Upper, Castleforbes Road, or Castleforbes Square between 10:15 p.m. and 10:30 a.m. pm on Monday night.

They are also attractive to road users with camera footage, such as a dash cam, of the area at the time.
