The “cowardly” man who struck an elderly pedestrian in Ballincollig “will be caught and must face the rigor of justice.”

Gardai is investigating after the road rage incident that occurred behind the Castlwest Mall at around 3.30pm Thursday.

A 70-year-old man was brutally beaten and left for dead on the road before being transferred to CUH.

Fortunately, his injuries are not life-threatening, but news of the senseless attack has angered locals.

A video, which people are asked not to share, showed the man being punched several times before he was thrown onto the road and left there.

A distraught woman watched as the attacker returned to his car and left the scene.

The altercation is understood to have erupted after a motorist allegedly failed to stop at a crosswalk.

Then the old man took a photo of the car registration before a man came out and words were exchanged.

The culprit then began punching the pedestrian before he was knocked to the ground.

Gardai is understood to have verified CCTV in the area and is confident that he will be able to locate the culprit.

Local Fianna Fail Cllr Colm Kelleher was one of many who were disgusted by the attack and sent his thoughts to the victim and his family.

Gardai has also asked witnesses to provide information.
