The first baby born in Ireland in 2021 was little Brody McWilliam Brown, whose mother had recently tested positive for Covid-19.

“He’s great. He’s doing great,” his mother Jennifer McWilliams told the Irish Examiner of the National Maternity Hospital.

It’s a little crazy. You want to leave all that [Covid-19] in 2020, but the first baby born was from a mother who had it. “

Ms McWilliams, 19, was due to deliver on January 13, but was admitted to the hospital on December 31 with chest pains and was induced later that day after she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. She gave birth four seconds after midnight.

“Brody surprised us by coming in early, it’s a fantastic start to the new year,” he said.

“We can’t believe this is the first baby born in Ireland in 2021!

“You certainly know how to make an entrance!”

Professor Shane Higgins, a teacher at the National Maternity Hospital, said it was “ironic” that the first baby born in 2021 was to a Covid-positive mother.

On December 22, Jennifer had tested positive for Covid-19 despite having no symptoms at the time.

Brody McWilliams Brown, who weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces, was born four seconds after midnight.

“I went to the hospital with contraction pains because her head was compromised and the hospital ran blood tests and a Covid-19 test just to rule it out. They didn’t think I had it, but I tested positive.”

Ms. McWilliams lost her sense of taste shortly after the positive result, but her main concern was her baby.

That was the most alarming part. Could I have passed it on? But my doctor said that most babies born to mothers with Covid have not contracted it and some have been born with the antibodies.

“Hopefully I’m one of them.

“My 10 days of isolation is supposed to end today, but when I return home I will remain isolated just to be safe. I don’t want to go out if I’m contagious.

“I would like to thank all the staff at the National Maternity Hospital who have just been brilliant and have taken care of Brody and me in the best way even though I have Covid-19,” he said.

At the University of Cork Maternity Hospital, another baby was born one minute after midnight.

Macroom parents Karen Clarke Foley and Michael Foley were delighted to welcome their fourth child to the family.

Micheal said they have not yet chosen a name for the new baby.

Having one of the first babies of the year born during a pandemic has been a “surreal” experience, but the family is “over the moon,” Michael said.

“It has been such a tough year for so many people, everyone has endured it in different ways. But we have been blessed because since late spring we knew that everything was going well, we had a baby on the way.

It gave us hope and helped us get through the year. “He gave us more during the confinement than he will ever know.

“No matter what is happening around you, life always goes on. There is a future and that future brings hope ”.
