A prominent GP warns that daily reporting of Covid-19 figures is an “emotional roller coaster” for people and creates great anxiety.
Dr. Maitiu O’Tuathail says it would be much more helpful if they were posted weekly with more context.
Yesterday 98 cases of Covid-19 were reported with no new deaths.
Dr. O’Tuathail says the daily release of case numbers is having a huge impact on people:
“We had 50 cases on Sunday, 217 cases on Monday and then 80 cases the next day. It’s this emotional roller coaster, so when cases are high, people are generally scared and anxious and when they are low it is falsely reassuring people. .
“Because we report cases as numbers without real context, they have no meaning.”
Intensive care units
To date, there have been 29,303 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 1,777 deaths from the virus in Ireland.
There are currently 48 people hospitalized with confirmed cases of Covid-19 and seven people are being treated in ICU.
This occurs when doctors have revealed that the majority of patients who have been treated in Intensive Care Units for Covid-19 have survived.
The overall survival rate of the virus nationwide in the ICU is about 83 percent, despite the fact that some people have been very ill.
Doctors will share what they have learned about treating critically ill patients today in a webinar.
The President of the College of Anesthesiologists of Ireland, Dr Brian Kinirons, says that patients are getting younger and younger:
“As of today, we have seven patients nationwide in ICUs from across the country with Covid-19. Therefore, this cohort may be younger.
“It may reflect the fact that this cohort has fewer other illnesses than older patients might have. So there is less need for hospitalization and intensive care as well.”
