Cork is making progress in the campaign to bring the number of Covid-19 cases in the region as close to zero as possible, according to HSE South Area Acting Director of Public Health, Dr. Anne Sheahan.
Dr Sheahan today thanked the people of Cork for their hard work in recent weeks to stop the spread of Covid-19, and said that this work is beginning to pay off.
We had kept the level of the virus very low in Cork for several months, but from the end of September and the beginning of October we saw some very worrying increases. The people of Cork are now working together to turn that around and it is important to let you know that this is making a difference.
While the number of Covid-19 cases in Cork still needed to decline further, Dr. Sheahan said she has seen reassuring trends in the last week or so.
I want to thank the people of Cork for all they have done. It is clear that they are doing what is necessary to control the virus in their communities.
I informed you previously when the number of cases was increasing in our region, and now I am pleased to report that we are seeing some positive signs. In the last week of October, we saw more than 150 new confirmed cases in Cork almost every day. But in the last week, the daily numbers of confirmed cases have been well below 100 per day. The chart below shows that the trend continues this week and this is very encouraging.
Dr Sheahan said this reduction has been achieved because Cork residents have made difficult choices.
“I know that the current restrictions to stop the spread of Covid-19 are particularly tough. We are beginning to see the impact of some of the restrictions, but it is important that we continue with the actions that protect us all. We need to reduce the number of cases in Cork to almost zero. We have not reached that point yet, but if we maintain the measures, I am confident that we will, “he said.
Dr. Sheahan reminded everyone of the practices that we must all maintain.
“In particular, I ask you to remember:
- The virus is spread from person to person quite easily. That is why it is important to keep your distance.
- We all need to be aware of the symptoms of Covid-19 and when to isolate ourselves (stay in our rooms) or restrict our movement (stay home). I encourage everyone to use hse.ie as the best source of information on symptoms and actions that we should all take.
- If you have symptoms, you should stay home, contact your GP, and arrange a free test. Anyone waiting for a test or test result should stay home. Again, hse.ie is the best source of information on the actions we all need to take.
