The issue of imposing fines of 50 to 200 euros for disobeying various regulations is something that experts have mentioned frequently recently.

A senior government source told the Irish Mirror this week that everything related to the fines was “under review”, but that it was not yet being worked on.

The Health Department confirmed another 506 cases with one more death on Thursday.

Donegal and Monaghan currently have the worst Covid rates in the country.

Here are the latest Covid-19 updates on Friday morning in Ireland;

Schools may have an additional midterm break

As the Irish Mirror reported on Thursday night, schools could have an additional two weeks off mid-term to slow the spread of the virus.

We reveal that Health Minister Stephen Donnelly is urging that we move to Level 5 on October 26, when the nation’s school children get their week-long Halloween half-term break.

The Cabinet could close schools for an additional two weeks to give the country a full three-week lockdown, so that the Covid 19 virus is back under control.

Latest from the Taoiseach

Taoiseach Micheal Martin and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met on Thursday to discuss the deteriorating situation in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin.

A Taoiseach spokesman said: “They both expressed concern about the rising numbers in the North, but the prime minister also expressed concern about the impact of the restrictions on the economy. They will continue to monitor the situation and stay in contact.”

Expert warning

Professor Philip Nolan, a member of NPHET, has warned that Ireland must act quickly to stop the spread of Covid.

He tweeted on Thursday: “The exponential growth of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Ireland should cause each and every one of us to stop, reflect and resolve again to do our part to suppress the virus, now and quickly.

“The call to action is the same as it has been for weeks, but now it is much more urgent: radically limit our discretionary social contacts, maintain physical distance and safe practices when meeting, isolate ourselves and ask for help with any symptoms of COVID -19.

“We have seen an increase in cases, now we are seeing a rapid increase in the number of people admitted to hospitals and ICUs.

“We had, on average, during the week to Tuesday, October 6: 131 people in the hospital; 13 admissions per day; 21 people in ICU; and 2 admissions in ICU per day. This afternoon there are 172 people in the hospital ( 22 admissions in the last 24 hours) and 27 in ICU (3 admissions).

“It is worth noting that at the peak of the pandemic, in the worst case, we saw between 60 and 80 admissions to the hospital and between 10 and 15 admissions to the ICU per day, for a limited period of 4 weeks. almost a quarter of the way for those admission fees. We must change course now.

“The number of people in the hospital is now growing exponentially. We made this simple exponential adjustment to the hospital data last Friday, October 1, although we expected it, I am still concerned that the numbers follow this exponential curve.

“There are very few counties where incidence is not increasing, and no county where incidence is not a cause for concern. We are in this together. We can reverse these trends. Simple steps work. Keep it up.”
