Another 211 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Ireland today and the numbers continue to rise.

Only one more person died from the virus, while Dublin continues to see by far the largest increase in numbers.

Many government ministers and Dr. Ronan Glynn commented on the virus today and gave updates on the current situation.

Here are all the main points you need to read about Covid-19 from those responsible this Friday night.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin

Speaking in Cork today, the Taoiseach said there will be no “knee-jerk reaction” to coronavirus spikes once the new plan is released next Tuesday.

Micheal Martin said the plan will show the plan for the next six months and how Ireland can continue to live with the virus.

The Fianna Fail leader added that he understands the fatigue of people with the virus, but that normalcy is a bit far off.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar

Speaking today, Leo Varadkar said that Ireland is dealing well with this second wave, but that we must keep the country open.

The Fine Gael leader said the pandemic is still ‘raging’ but that “there is a level where we can live with the virus.”

Mr Varadkar said: “I think it is very possible that we will see multiple waves of the virus.”

“We have to make sure that our second wave of cases does not turn into a second wave of deaths, a second wave of morbidity and avoid, if possible, a second lockdown.”

The Tanaiste also said it is ‘sure’ the world will soon have a vaccine, although it does not expect it to roll out until the first half of 2021.

Minister Simon Harris

The Minister of Higher Education, former Minister of Health, said that if there is an increase in cases anywhere in the country, the government will have to seek advice from NPHET and that no one can “get ahead of the process” of reopening pubs.

Harris said: “The plan at the moment is that pubs can be opened from 21 of this month, but the government was clear: anywhere in the country, if there is an increase in cases, NPHET will have to advise the government on what appropriate to do.

“Nobody who is standing on this podium or any other can anticipate that process, because they are seeing the figures every hour and every day.

“I hope we are in a position on Tuesday, when we presumably approve the new roadmap and publish it, to add final clarity to it.”

Acting CMO Dr. Ronan Glynn

Speaking after the 211 cases were announced today, the acting CMO had a weekend warning to the public.

Dr. Glynn said; “While we are seeing a continued increase in cases, particularly in Dublin, this is due, at least in part, to people’s willingness to heed our core messages about awareness of symptoms and to come forward for testing promptly. .

“This, along with all the other key behaviors, will help break the chains of transmission in our communities.

“This weekend, limit your social contacts, especially visits to your home. Avoid crowds, stay away from others, and wear a face cover where appropriate. “
