Covid-19 Ireland Level 5: Cabinet to meet Monday to discuss restrictions after crucial talks with NPHET

The government has announced that the cabinet will meet on Monday to discuss the possibility of Covid-19 restrictions.

Government leaders issued a statement tonight after crucial talks with health chiefs about the deteriorating coronavirus situation in Ireland.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar, and Eamon Ryan met with the Ministers of Health, Finance and Public Expenditure to discuss the implications of entering a Level 5 lockdown.

Health Department Medical Director Tony Holohan as well as Deputy Medical Director Ronan Glynn and Professor Philip Nolan also met with TDs to explain the latest Covid trends.

A government spokesman said in a statement tonight that Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan made a presentation on how the virus is affecting different regions of the country.

Meanwhile, HSE CEO Paul Reid provided an assessment of the hospital’s current responsiveness and an update to the test and trace system.

The spokesperson added that health chiefs told ministers that children were safer in schools, meaning that they will likely remain open regardless of any possible new restrictions being put in place.

The statement read: “Earlier today, Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan, Deputy Marketing Director Dr. Ronan Glynn, and Professor Philip Nolan made a detailed presentation to the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, Minister Ryan, Minister Donohoe, Minister McGrath and Minister Donnelly on the latest Covid-19 related data in Ireland.

“The CMO provided an analysis of the virus in each region of the country and HSE Executive Director Paul Reid provided an assessment of the hospital’s current responsiveness and an update to the test and trace system, which HSE continues to expand.

Presentations were also made on the broad economic, labor and social implications of moving to more severe restrictions.

Other important topics such as mental health and domestic violence were also discussed.

“Central to the discussions was the overarching goal of protecting lives and livelihoods.

“The Health team informed the ministers that children are safer in schools, transmission rates are low and that the continuous opening of schools is very important for the development and well-being of children and young people.

“The Cabinet will meet on Monday to further consider the matter.”
