Covid-19 Ireland: Four counties record a staggering drop in cases after closing week

Four counties have seen a staggering drop in new cases in the last week.

While it is too early to say with certainty that the Level Five lockdown measures have been effective, several areas are already reporting much lower cases.

The new measures went into effect on Wednesday, October 21, and 1,167 new worrisome infections were announced the previous Tuesday.

However, today that number is just 720, and several previous hotspots are showing much slower growth of the disease.

One of the most dramatic differences can be seen in Meath, which went from 142 cases last Tuesday to 31 today, as well as in Louth which went from 56 last week to just 17 today.

Border counties that were forced to enter level four closures earlier than the rest of the country have also seen a big drop in cases.

Cavan has gone from 86 new cases last Tuesday to 18 today, and Donegal from 48 to just seven.

Unfortunately, levels remain largely stable in both Dublin and Cork, where hundreds of new infections are reported each day.
