Limerick, Kildare, Dublin, Tipperary and Carlow are currently the five counties with the highest 14-day incidence rates of Covid-19 in the Republic.
All five have rates of more than 50 cases per 100,000 people during the past two weeks.
Leitrim, which is the smallest county by population, recorded 11 more infections on Monday. The increase in cases means that Leitrim now has a 14-day incidence rate of 49.9, compared to a rate of just 3.1 in neighboring Sligo.
As of last Saturday, the county had seen just 90 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began in Ireland in early March.
Dublin was once again the worst hit area in the country in the latest Health Department update, as the capital reported 56 new infections on Monday night.
Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn played down the suggestion of a second shutdown in Dublin and Limerick, which has also become an area of concern for the National Public Health Emergency Team.
Dr. Glynn warned people in both counties that the virus is in the community and that next week is crucial.
Speaking at the Covid-19 press conference on Monday, he said that talking about another lockdown is “really pointless.”
“If we have to recommend additional measures, it will be measures to protect people,” he said.
“We still have control over this, we still have the power to change the trajectory of this.”
