Foreign Minister Simon Coveney is in Iran, where he has met with the country’s president, Hassan Rouhani.

Then the minister said: “The meeting went very well. I outlined the opportunity now to re-engage with the JCPOA, but emphasize the need to be willing to engage with the new US administration in the necessary steps.”

He is also expected to meet with the Islamic Republic’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Javad Zarif.

On Friday night, Zarif indicated on Twitter that Iran will soon present a “constructive” action plan, and European sources suggested there were positive signs that Tehran could start informal talks on its nuclear program.

As part of its membership in the UN Security Council this year, Ireland has been named a facilitator of a UN resolution calling for full implementation of the nuclear deal.

Minister Coveney said in a statement before the trip that Ireland wishes to maintain a close dialogue with all stakeholders and encourages all parties to return to full compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal.
