A couple who were married for 48 years died of coronavirus with moments of separation as they held hands.
Johnny Lee Peoples, 67, and his wife, Cathy Darlene Peoples, 65, battled Covid-19 for a month at a hospital in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center staff moved the couple, who had been together for 50 years, to the same room so they could spend their last moments together.
They both died on September 2.
Mr. and Mrs. Peoples’ coronavirus battle began 30 days earlier when they both suffered from symptoms.
The couple’s son, Shane Peoples, told WBTV: “It was mainly the fever and loss of taste.
“My dad started showing symptoms two days later.
“About two weeks later, they were both admitted to the ICU. Everything went wrong, everything got worse.”
And as the couple’s conditions worsened, they were able to comfort each other at the hospital.
Shane said: “The next day they were put in the same room, in the same ICU ward, they put their hands together, the nurses met and passed within four minutes of each other.”
A socially estranged funeral for the couple was held outside Wednesday morning.
Shane said the coronavirus must be taken seriously.
“This is not a joke. It is not a hoax,” Peoples said. “I just don’t have anyone else to hurt. I don’t have anyone to feel the pain we’re feeling.”
He posted a heartbreaking tribute to his parents on Facebook.
It read: “They tricked us. Mom and Dad’s lives were stolen by a virus that many joke about on a daily basis or simply believe to be a hoax of some kind. They both took this pandemic seriously and still got sick, still died. ..
“I told myself when I started this, I would not do it out of anger, but out of the love they inspired me to give.
“They both loved their family very much and did anything and everything they could do for them. Their love for family was greatest when it came to their grandchildren, nine of them in total. They wanted the best for their grandchildren, they would go outside their way just to make each one of them feel special. I had amazing parents.
“I miss them so much. I’m not sure how I’m going to deal with them without being about to talk to them every night on my drive home from work or without being able to send them photos and videos of my family.
“I’ll never be able to hug them again. I’ll never hear Mom sing happy birthday to anyone again. I’ll never see them smile when they see Liam and Ava walk into the room.
“They will not see their grandchildren grow up or see many of their grandchildren graduate.
“I just wish everyone could see them through my eyes. You would see the two most loving and caring couples of all time. Without them, this world just got a little bleaker.”
So far, 3,023 people have died from coronavirus in North Carolina, with more than 182,000 cases in the US state.
