County-by-county snow forecast: Met Eireann update when icy weather hits

It’s December and things are getting colder before Christmas.

Today we saw how snow hit parts of Ireland, including Donegal and Clare, and it looks like freezing conditions will only spread across the country in the next few hours and days.

Met Eireann predicts snow and ice in several counties, but we are all preparing for a period of weather that will be unstable at best.

Snow in Culdaff, Donegal

Ulster

Antrim

Antrim, in Northern Ireland, is one of eight counties on the island facing a yellow status warning for snow and ice. Trip interruption is possible, with temperatures scheduled to reach zero.

Armagh

Conditions in Armagh will be icy but dry, with cloudy conditions and temperatures plummeting for the next 24 hours. Tonight it will be very cold there in particular.

Temperatures in Cavan will drop below freezing, down to minus 1, at times tonight, although temperatures will rise as night turns into day tomorrow.

Derry

Icy conditions will hit Derry in the next few hours, with the thermometer set to drop to zero and be below zero for most of the night before recovering tomorrow morning. Snow is likely overnight, and Derry is one of the counties where there is a yellow status warning.

Donegal

Parts of Donegal have already seen snow, and that could continue overnight as the icy conditions continue. There is a yellow warning throughout the county at night.

Down

Down will escape the snow, but that doesn’t mean things won’t be cold – temperatures will hover around zero for most of the night.

Fermanagh

Tonight will be a mixture of cloudy and cold in Fermanagh, with arctic conditions but no snow. And tomorrow morning will even bring a cloudy sun.

Monaghan

Temperatures in Monaghan will stay around zero for most of the night, but will improve tomorrow morning before it rains in the afternoon.

Tyrone

Tyrone, the third county in Northern Ireland to face a yellow status warning, will likely see snow overnight, according to a local forecast from Met Eireann. Temperatures will reach minus one in the first few hours.

Munster

Clare

Clare is far enough south to avoid Status Yellow, but things will still be cold. Temperatures will bottom out by a degree overnight, but there will be some sunshine tomorrow.

cork

In Cork, it will be very cold all night, but there will be no snow in the city, according to the local Met Eireann forecast.

Kerry

The Kingdom will see conditions similar to the counties in and around it, with cold and icy conditions possible but no snow.

Limerick comic

In Limerick, things will get to freezing overnight, with cloudy conditions but nothing in the way of rain or snow.

Tipperary

Temperatures will briefly drop to freezing in Tipperary and will remain steady at one degree for most of the night after that.

Waterford

Waterford on the east coast will be freezing for most of the night, but in typical sunny Southeast fashion, there will be some chilly sunshine tomorrow.

Leinster

Carlow

Midlands counties are often the hardest hit by the cold, and temperatures in Carlow will drop to minus one. However, there will be no snow.

Dublin

In the capital, it’s a zero-degree straight line for most of the night, according to Met Eireann. Ice may be present, but snow is unlikely.

Kildare

Minus one is the lowest in Kildare, with temperatures rising and falling below freezing most of the night and no snow forecast.

Kilkenny

With freezing temperatures at night in Kilkenny, it is likely to be freezing. Once again, however, there is no snow.

Laois

Midnight in Laois will bring temperatures of minus one, and they will stay that way until nearly 11am tomorrow on an arctic night.

Longford

Longford will be as cold as it is tonight in Ireland, with temperatures plummeting to minus two and ice hitting but snow will stay away.

Louth

Louth is freezer ready, with freezing temperatures on a cloudy night that won’t bring snow.

Meath

Meath will witness temperatures of minus one on a frosty night, seeing ice, frost, and clouds, but no snow.

Offaly

Birr will earn its name in Offaly, with temperatures fluctuating on both sides of the mercury tonight.

Westmeath

For most of tonight, temperatures will be freezing in Westmeath, but avoid snow.

Wexford

After 3 a.m. M., Temperatures will rise by themselves above the icy ground at Wexford. It will be very cold, but there will be no snow.

Wicklow

Wicklow will actually be one of the warmest places to be in Ireland tonight. Stay firm though – it’ll still be at and around two degrees, so staying wrapped under the covers is your best bet.

Connacht

Galway

There is a yellow status warning in Galway until 7 a.m. tomorrow, although snow is unlikely in the city, according to Met Eireann.

Leitrim

Leitrim is another county under the Yellow State, which warns of winter rains and falls of hail, sleet and snow. It is also one of the Connacht counties that could experience thunderstorms, so watch out for that.

Mayonnaise

A Status Yellow is in place here as well, with snow possible around 9pm tonight. Overnight, however, snow is more likely to turn into dull rain.

Roscommon

Roscommon has escaped a Status Yellow, but things will continue to be very cold, as the icy clouds approach during the night.

Sligo

Sligo, the last of the Status Yellow counties, will see chilly temperatures, but overnight rain is more likely than snow.
