The DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL has confirmed that Lord Iveagh has reclaimed the historic Iveagh Markets in Dublin 8.
The long saga regarding the future of the red brick market building on Francis Street has taken a new turn after the Council was informed today that Lord Iveagh, who is a descendant of Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, had invoked the ‘ Reverter ‘. clause contained in the original 1906 Transmission Deed.
The ownership of markets has been contested for several years. Entrepreneur Martin Keane received planning permission for The Iveagh Markets redevelopment in 2007 after agreeing to a long-term lease with the City Council in 1997. However, the planning permission expired in 2017.
In December 2019, Keane submitted a new planning request for the market refurbishment.
Earlier this year, the Council said it planned to bring back The Iveagh Markets in Dublin 8 after years of stalled redevelopment. He later declared invalid a building permit presented by Keane to restore the markets.
A Council spokesperson said TheJournal.ie that “as the Iveagh Market Building has been out of use as a market for a considerable number of years, Lord Iveagh, in accordance with the terms contained in the deed of assignment, has repossessed the property this morning and has notified the Council accordingly “.
“The Council is considering the matter with its legal advisers,” they said.
It is understood that the building’s locks have been changed and that new security equipment has been installed.
According to RTÉ, which first reported on the development, there are plans to restore the building to its original market use.
A report commissioned by DCC last September said that more than € 13 million would be needed to carry out “essential structural repairs” on the historic red brick structure, which has gradually deteriorated in recent years.

The Local Area Plan (LAP) for Freedoms, adopted by the city council in May 2009 (and extended in 2014 until May 2020), states that Iveagh Markets “with its distinctive character … will become a commercial district of destination when open “.
In 2017, local councilors voted to take over the markets, located in Liberties and built by the Iveagh Trust in 1890.
Mr. Keane has been contacted for comment.
