Coroner John Ellery delivered a suicide verdict in an investigation into Rose Paterson’s death in Shrewsbury on Tuesday.
The body of the president of Aintree racecourse was discovered in a forest near his home in Ellesmere, near Wrexham, in the early hours of June 24, after police were called because she had not been seen since 10 a.m. of the night of June 22.
An autopsy by pathologist Joanne Stafford revealed that she had died by hanging. Paterson left No notes, but his eldest son, Felix, gave evidence to the investigation that a check on his browser history revealed that he had conducted three Internet searches for suicide methods.
Her husband, Conservative MP Owen Paterson, said he spoke to Ms Paterson by phone from London twice on June 22, but that four call attempts the following day went unanswered. When her youngest son, Ned, called to tell her he hadn’t seen her all day, Owen Paterson called 999 from his office and headed home with Felix.
After the investigation, which he attended via video link, Paterson said: “The coroner’s verdict that my wife Rose committed suicide by hanging is absolutely tragic for me, my family and everyone who knew her. We were married for 40 very happy years. We are still a long way from beginning to accept his death.
“I would like to thank the Shropshire Coroner and West Mercia Police for the sensitive manner in which they have handled this tragedy.
“I am now terribly aware that 18 people commit suicide every day in the UK and I intend to become more involved in suicide prevention strategies. If I can prevent a single family from going through the extreme anguish that our family is currently experiencing, I will have done something truly worthwhile. “
Rose Paterson, 63, had been president of Aintree since 2014 and joined the Jockey Club’s board of directors last year.
Aintree President Nicholas Wrigley said: “We send our deepest condolences to Rose’s husband, Owen, and their children Felix, Ned and Evie. Rose was a wonderful and highly respected president at Aintree and a member of Aintree’s senior board of directors.
“She was a loving and popular person and her friends at Aintree, our local community partners and the Jockey Club will miss her deeply.”
