Coronavirus Ireland: study shows how a flight arriving in Ireland with 13 people infected with COVID-19 leads to almost 60 cases

A flight landing in Ireland with 13 people infected with COVID-19 resulted in nearly 60 confirmed cases, a new study showed.

The massive outbreak occurred during the summer, according to a new Eurosurveillance study.

The group of 13 that brought the virus to Ireland had traveled “after being flown through a large international airport, flying to Europe from three different continents.”

The ages of the cases ranged from just one year to 65 years, with a median age of 23, while 12 of the 13 were asymptomatic.

COVID-positive people on the plane then spread the disease through six of the eight HSE regions, although the locations were not named in the report.

The flight’s takeoff and landing locations and details were also left out of the report, but it does say that the flight lasted seven and a half hours and that 49 passengers were on board.

The 13 flat cases resulted in 46 more cases in Ireland, a total of 59 overall, with 34 of the 46 asymptomatic.

Two large groups of social gatherings and six groups of households contributed to the spread.

The study shows the risks associated with international travel during the pandemic and concludes that “strict infection prevention and control measures on board are vital to reduce the risk of both symptomatic and asymptomatic in-flight transmission.”

The authors continued: “Restriction of movement on arrival and robust contact tracing are essential to limit spread after flight.”
