Coronavirus Ireland: Nphet recommends new restrictions on home visits for the entire country

Visits to family homes will be limited to six people from another home, according to new recommendations from public health officials.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) has said new restrictions should be applied to home visits across the country.

The Covid-19 restriction aims to clamp down on house parties that are leading to new cases of the virus.

The rule that is currently in place in Dublin and Donegal is likely to be rolled out across the country.

The rules mean that now only two households can be mixed into a family home at the same time and the number of visitors will be limited to six people.

Nphet is not believed to have recommended moving other counties to level three restrictions.

A government decision on the recommendations will be made later today.

It is not expected that Cabinet approval will be needed to introduce the new restrictions, as level two of the Living with the virus plan allows changes to the number of home visits allowed.

The plan outlines three options ranging from allowing six people from three separate households to visit another household to the proposed new rules allowing only one.

A government source said that cabinet meetings are only necessary when restrictions involve important economic or social decisions.
