Gardaí is investigating the source of threatening posters that were apparently displayed at different locations in a popular resort town of West Clare.
Pages printed on A4 were published at various locations in Kilkee, including mobile home parks and vacation homes. It has also been claimed that the posters were placed in the mailboxes of local holiday homes in the city.
The signs told vacation home owners to “f ** k off” or they may not have vacation homes to return to when the Covid-19 crisis ends.
The page, titled “Kilkee Residents Health Advocacy,” read: “Vacation Home Owners. Staying Home Doesn’t Mean Your Vacation Spot. We Want You Back Home. Do the Right Thing, F ** k Out from Kilkee NOW! If you don’t leave, when the crisis is over, you may not have a vacation home to return to this summer. “
The Kilkee Chamber of Commerce has said it “fully condemns such absurd, counterproductive and criminal behavior.”
A spokesperson said: “We urge anyone who has received this letter or has any other information about this to contact Gardaí immediately and would ask anyone with CCTV cameras to take a look and see if they have images of this posted.
“This is not indicative of the attitude of the overwhelming majority of people in Kilkee. This is the action of one or two idiots and seeking care. We urge everyone to stay safe, follow official advice from HSE and An Garda. Síochána and we look forward to welcoming you back to Kilkee once this crisis is over. “
Local councilor for Fianna Fáil and tourism consultant Cillian Murphy described it as “a reprehensible cowardly act.”
“I have not seen a physical copy of this, so I can only follow what people are telling me. This is shocking and does not reflect most of the people here in Kilkee. I am told that they were also left in some mailboxes and would ask those people who take them to the Garda station and file a formal complaint. “
Concerns had been expressed earlier in the week when large numbers of vacation home owners were reported to have started arriving in the city.
Murphy stated: “People with second homes in the west of Ireland are extremely lucky in life, much luckier than many people who live in the communities where they have their homes. I ask that you respect the areas that have welcomed you over the years by staying away this Easter.
“It is time to show some appreciation for the privilege you have in life and regret the health of people who live permanently on the coast.”
Gardaí in Kilrush is investigating the incident and has asked anyone with information to contact them at 065 9080550.
Elsewhere in Clare, a larger but less threatening banner appeared on the main road from Ennis to Lahinch, near Ennistymon. It says, “If you don’t live here, don’t be here.”
