Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin schools may be forced to close today after urgent recall of hand sanitizer

Some Dublin schools may be forced to close today after a certain type of hand sanitizer was recalled due to health and safety concerns.

The Department of Education has informed all schools to check if they have used the supplier for this disinfectant and product stocks.

Virapro Hand Sanitizer (PCS 100409) demonstrated in the following tests that some of the sanitizers for sale do not comply with government regulations.

It was removed from the Biocidal Product Register after it was confirmed that some of the product contains methanol instead of ethanol.

Additional funds will be provided to all affected schools to allow them to purchase other disinfectants from alternative vendors.

Prolonged use of this disinfectant can cause dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory system irritation, and headaches.

The statement went on to say, “This product may not remain on the market or be unavailable for use. The Department has directed the company involved to initiate an immediate recall of all products.

“Members of the public are advised to stop using this disinfectant with immediate effect. A Department investigation into this matter is ongoing.”
