Dublin faces a new wave of restrictions as coronavirus cases continue to rise in the city.
Tonight another 196 cases of the virus were announced, with 107 in the capital.
A worrying number of these new cases are associated with community transmission, while an alarming number are over 65 years old.
Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn said: “Today we have at least 37 cases related to community transmission. 27 of the current cases are over 65 years old.
“By limiting our contacts, we limit the opportunity for COVID-19 to spread through the community and ultimately protect our families, our communities and those who are most vulnerable to the most severe impacts of the disease.”
The National Public Health Emergency Team met today and RTE reports that it has recommended that restrictions be placed on the number of social visits to people’s homes in Dublin.
Six visitors from two other households are likely to be allowed, a reduction from the three currently recommended.
Tighter restrictions will be placed on residential care facilities to protect vulnerable people.
The opening of all pubs in the city on September 21 also appears to be threatened, as it is likely to depend on the spread of the virus at that time.
Any new measure is likely to be in place for three weeks, but must first be approved by the government.
A Cabinet Subcommittee is expected to meet to discuss NPHET’s recommendations later tonight.
