Ireland’s chief medical officer has praised the country for achieving the lowest COVID-19 incidence rate in Europe.

And Dr. Tony Holohan singled out young people especially for their “tremendous achievement” in reducing COVID infection numbers.

But he also gave everyone a Christmas to keep up the work we’ve done so far.

Dr Holohan said: “Ireland currently has the lowest incidence in Europe and has protected against the significant mortality and serious illness experienced by many European countries, as well as the United States.

“Our younger generation led the way, with the incidence in the 19-24 age group reduced from 432 per 100,000 population to 41 per 100,000 population.

“This is a huge achievement.

“We must all recognize how well our younger generation has reduced its contacts and helped protect the entire population.”

But he added a timely reminder that we should continue to follow this example through Christmas.

He added: “We can do this by planning for Christmas from now on to reduce our social contacts and limit our activities to those that are essential and most important to us.”

Health officials announced 248 new cases of coronavirus in Ireland on Saturday.

That brings the total number of cases in the country since the pandemic began to 75,756.

There have also been three more deaths from COVID-19 in the country.

So far, 2,123 people have sadly lost their lives as a result of the disease.
