THOUSANDS of people across the country marked ‘Darkness into Light’ upon waking up at 5:30 a.m. after the official event was dropped due to Covid-19
The Sunrise Campaign, which is organized by Pieta House, sees participants run or walk 5 km before sunrise to help people who have died by suicide.

The mental health charity asked members of the public to still wake up early and post photos of the sunrise on social media.
Pieta House said earlier this month: “Darkness into Light, proudly backed by Electric Ireland, is being postponed. Without the funds raised by this event, all Pieta services are now facing an immediate and devastating financial crisis.”
“More than 80 percent of our funds come from the public, and we need you to help us today to keep our life-saving services available to those who need them most, especially during these dark days.”
SUNRISE FROM HOME
They added: “Since we are not going to walk together this May, Pieta and Electric Ireland want to invite everyone to show community and solidarity with those affected by suicide by getting up at 5:30 a.m. at 9 a.m.th May to see the sunrise from their homes.
“Please spread our message and offer hope by wearing a Darkness Into Light T-shirt, or anything yellow, and share your sunrise moment with #DILSunriseAppeal # DIL2020.”
Members of the public devised creative and safe ways to participate in the charity appeal when the official fundraiser was phased out as a result of the global pandemic.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar also participated and published a series of photos on his social media accounts at sunrise in Phoneix Park.
MARKING THE EVENT
The Fine Gael boss was among the thousands of people who got up early and posted photos to mark the event.
Kinsale Youth Support Services organized a parade of up to 50 emergency vehicles that put their blue lights on when the sun was rising in Cork.
Late Late Show viewers have raised over 1.5 million euros for Pieta House so far after a “powerful and emotional” speech by host Ryan Tubridy on mental health.
It revealed that the RTE campus had been candlelit to remember everyone who died of suicide in 2019.
Ryan said: “Each candle represents a person who died by suicide in this beautiful country in 2019. Each candle is too much.”
Earlier this month, Pieta House began laying off nonessential personnel and told employees, “It is vital that we survive Covid-19.”
