Tesco Ireland CEO Kari Daniels said in a statement that the company wanted to mark the commitment of its colleagues.
She said: “The Covid-19 crisis has created unprecedented demands and pressures on retail and distribution.
“In recognition, we decided to give a 10 percent bonus to colleagues in stores eight weeks ago. We are now extending it for another four weeks.”
“As a further token of appreciation, we have increased our colleagues’ shopping discount from 10 to 15 percent during the three weeks through May 17.
EIGHT WEEKS OF CHANGE
“It has been eight weeks of change for everyone, including in our operations where we have prioritized public health to support a safe shopping and work experience.
“Our colleagues have faced these challenges, and I thank them for their support and contribution as together we respond to Covid-19.”
This news comes after the supermarket’s announcement on March 21 that it would grant a 10 percent hourly rate bonus to staff working in its stores and distribution, dated March 9.
A statement at the time said: “For the past two weeks, Tesco colleagues in Ireland have worked around the clock to help customers get the products they need.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented increase in demand for food and household products in stores and online across Ireland.”
While this bonus originally ran until May 1, it will now run until May 30.
On March 21, Daniels said in a statement posted on the Tesco Ireland website: “It has been an unprecedented couple of weeks and, despite the enormous challenges, it has been incredible to see how colleagues have stepped forward and they responded, doing an exceptional job. “
“This salary bonus is just one of the ways that we thank our colleagues and recognize that they are on the front lines, helping to serve Irish shoppers during these uncertain and difficult times.”
