A NEW chart shows that daily deaths from Covid-19 in Ireland may have peaked ten days ago on April 7, and have nearly halved since then.

The number of deaths reported by the National Public Health Emergency Team every day is the number that is reported to them each day, rather than the numbers that actually died that day.

Medical Director Tony Holohan told RTE News that it may be a few days before they are notified of the deaths.

The new graph shows the actual time and pattern of deaths each day.

It shows that daily deaths actually peaked on April 7 with 39 deaths recorded, though the number reported that day was 36.

The new information also reveals that during the three weeks prior to April 10, the reported daily death toll did not actually represent the reality of how many people died that day.

SKEWED FIGURES

However, in the past week, daily totals have been overly representative to offset.

For example, the number of deaths reported for Friday, April 17 was 44, the highest so far, but only 20 of these deaths actually occurred on Friday.

The other 24 deaths occurred on earlier dates and were only officially reported yesterday.

The new information shows that, in reality, the number of daily coronavirus deaths has nearly halved from 39 to 20 since its peak ten days ago.

NO PEAK

Last night Dr. Holohan said Ireland has flattened the curve so much that there is no peak.

Speaking on the RTE Late Late Show, Dr. Holohan said he was optimistic about the restriction’s extension date.

He told host Ryan Tubridy: “What we are focused on is May 5.

“As we move forward, we will learn more and more as we begin to change measures.

“I am hopeful about May 5.”

Earlier today, it was announced that 44 more people, 19 women and 25 men, died from Covid-19 in Ireland.

HOPEFUL

But Dr. Holohan believes that these numbers are much lower than Ireland could have seen if he did not introduce restrictions.

He said, “We think we have flattened that curve so much that there is no peak.

“We believe that we can move to a low level and reduce it further.

“That is the good news.

“That the impact we have had from all the work that everyone in society has done.

“We believe it has already saved hundreds of lives and admissions to intensive care.

“In a sense, we are going after the virus.

‘INTERRUPT THE CHAINS’

“Disturb transmission chains to the best of our ability.”

Other countries in Europe have begun to reduce their restrictions in an effort to return to normal life.

Dr. Holohan added: “I never imagined as a doctor that I would preside over circumstances like these.

“Although we would have prepared a lot for pandemics, we would have experienced major infections in the past.

“The kinds of measures we have had to take in response to this are not measures we would have envisioned.”
