The company launched a local recruitment campaign amid controversy over the arrival of EU workers.

The company employs around 900 temporary workers during its harvest season from April to October.

According to BreakingNews.ie, the company is said to have received more than 480 local requests.

However, 192 of these applicants did not respond when contacted by the company.

Another 215 failed initial exams with Keelings, with localized reasons including lack of transportation or access to Keelings’ own bus service.

PICKERS ROW

In early April, Keelings confirmed that a chartered Ryanair flight from Sofia that landed in the capital contained a “number of qualified horticultural personnel” after images of seasonal workers arriving via arrivals were posted online.

The company noted that without “seasonal workers it would be impossible to bring fresh Irish strawberries to the Irish market.”

Keelings said at the time: “It is essential that we have adequate staff on the farm to pick crops quickly as they mature, or we are at risk of shortages in the market.

“Throughout our business, we have also worked tirelessly to implement government and HSE guidelines to ensure that we are protecting the health of all of our people.

“This includes comprehensive and repeated Covid-19 safety instructions and instructions to follow all HSE guidelines, including 14 days of restricted movement for any newcomer to the country, before starting work at Keelings.”

They added: “We understand the concern in the current environment regarding both social distancing and local employment.

“We want to assure the public that we are doing everything possible to help support local employment at this time and ensure the safety of all of our workers.”

Medical Director Tony Holohan said He was not comfortable with the idea of workers being transferred to the country from aboard.

He said at the time, “Well, I didn’t know. Maybe like you, I realized after it happened. It really wouldn’t be consistent with the public health advice we’ve been giving.

“I do not know the details of the circumstances, I am aware of what has been reported in the media.”
