He told reporters: “The current agreement now is that we recommend not traveling outside the island.
“We don’t want to see the Irish planning to go on vacation abroad and then having to return to the country where we are in a position where we might be looking at some additional restrictions that might apply to those people.”
He previously said: “Traveling outside the country obviously implies air travel and social distancing in those types of environments that we believe will be a challenge for people.”
“What we will also have to be aware of is that this is a disease that is found at a different point in different parts of the world.”
“People who travel to different parts of the world that have higher levels of infection pose a risk in terms of returning the infection to the country.”
“If we are progressing, we hope to do and we hope to do it as a country in the course of the remaining days between now and the 18th, if we are in a position to recommend the reduction of the restrictions to the Government and we begin The process of easing the restrictions will be because the Transmission of the disease has returned to low levels and, in relative terms, the risk of importation of infection becomes in relative terms, more important in terms of the source of the new infection. “
Earlier today, Ryanair announced that they plan to return to 40 percent of normal flight schedules on July 1 – 1,000 flights a day covering 90 percent of their normal routes.
The budget airline said this depends on government restrictions on flights between EU countries being lifted and that public health measures are in place at airports.
The new measures include passengers wearing masks at all times, as well as taking their own temperature before flying.
Airline chief Michael O’Leary also warned that the airline will not operate if necessary to keep the center seat empty.
However, Dr. Holohan, who did not comment specifically on Ryanair’s plans, said he does not foresee non-essential travel outside Ireland for July.
He said: “I am not particularly commenting on Ryanair, but our position at the moment is that we are discouraging all non-essential travel, I do not anticipate that position has changed in that time period.”
