ONE couple’s socializing weekend caused 30 cases of Covid-19 as the public is urged to ‘restrict’ social interactions.

Dr. Breda Smyth, Director of Public Health at HSE, revealed the information during tonight’s Health Department briefing, where 429 new cases and one death from the virus were confirmed.

She said: “A couple went on a trip. They returned on the first day of the weekend and attended a house party.

“At this house party that was attended by eight people. Six of the eight people became positive with Covid.”

Continuing, the doctor added: “They spent the night with a family and in this home three of the four members of the household became positive and also three more social contacts of the family became positive.

“One of the couple at the time, on the second day of the weekend, went with another group of friends to a dinner in the city center.

SOCIAL RESTRICTION CALLS

“And at that dinner there were four people and all four became positive.

“In the restaurant and bar where dinner was held, there was an adjoining table.

“The six members of that adjacent table turned positive and also four members of the staff of that establishment turned positive.

“The index case with another friend then went to another beverage outlet to meet a group of four for a drink and all four turned positive.”

Dr Smyth said this shows how quickly the virus can spread and the importance of “restricting your social interactions.”

She said, “If you were to cut your social interactions in half and maybe go out on a weekend night, that would help a lot.”

There have now been a total of 36,155 cases and 1,804 Covid-19 related deaths in the Republic of Ireland.

Meanwhile, also during the briefing, NPHET said they are “somewhat less optimistic” about a stabilization of Covid-19 cases in Dublin and the rest of the country after last week’s positive signals.

The chair of the NPHET Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, Professor Philip Nolan, also urged Dubliners to “redouble” efforts to reduce the number of cases.
