There have been 11 additional COVID-19-related deaths reported by the Health Department today, as well as 1,754 new confirmed cases.
Of the cases reported today, 180 are in Galway, by far the highest daily figure reported here to date in the coronavirus pandemic.
The only counties with more cases than Galway at present are Dublin (523) and Cork (296). Other parts of the west are not doing well either, as Mayo currently has the fourth highest level with 104 cases.
There have now been a total of 93,532 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland, and 2,248 deaths related to the virus have been reported in the state.
Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan said: “The most worrying trend today is the rapid increase in the number of people entering the hospital; we now admit 50 to 70 people a day into our hospital system.”
“Unfortunately, we expect this to get worse before it gets better. Our healthcare system will not continue to face this level of impact. “
As of 2:00 p.m. today, 504 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Ireland, of which 47 are in the ICU. 46 more people have been hospitalized in the last 24 hours.
“We have also seen a significant increase in positive laboratory tests in recent days, reflecting a real increase in the incidence of the disease, as well as the delay in people showing up for tests over the Christmas period.” .
“As our systems catch up with these effects, it puts significant pressure on our reporting system,” said Dr. Holohan.
Professor Philip Nolan warned that due to the large volume of positive tests that have occurred in recent days, up to 9,000 additional new cases will be reported in the coming days.
“The delay in notification does not affect case management or contact tracing or our overall monitoring and modeling of the pandemic.”
