Tonight another 396 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, while another death has unfortunately been announced.
The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team at a press conference, which began shortly before 6 p.m.
While the country continues to see encouraging signs that case numbers are heading in the right direction, caution is still advised ahead of the holiday season.
Today, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar shattered the hopes of those hoping to travel back to Ireland after he told Irish overseas not to book flights home for Christmas.
He said it was a time for “honesty” as he warned that the risk of Covid “reseeding” is too great for now.
Mr Varadkar put it bluntly, telling the Dáil: “I think in terms of people booking flights for Christmas to go home, I advise them not to do so at this time.”
And he warned that there could actually be “an increased risk” of infections spreading from Northern Ireland due to the higher rates and different rules there.
“I think in terms of people who book flights for Christmas to go home, I advise them not to do so at this time.
“I know it’s hard, I know it’s hard, but it’s six weeks until Christmas and it’s too early for people to book flights home.”
However, he offered some hope, adding that the Irish government is confident that it will be able to remove some of the stricter Covid-19 restrictions in Europe as scheduled in December.
“I think now everyone is confident that we will ease the restrictions in December,” Varadkar told Dail.
The rules that have closed all nonessential bars, restaurants and retail stores and banned nonessential travel more than 3 miles from home will expire on Dec. 1, though ministers have said less stringent restrictions are likely to remain. .
