Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street‘s producer Iain MacLeod has confirmed new details of Carla Connor’s big new storyline, ruling out some intriguing fan theories in the process.

The show’s boss has previously shared plans to revisit Carla’s mental health struggles by revealing a secret about the time she went missing last year.

The new information about Carla’s time away will be exposed when a ghost from her past turns up in Weatherfield. This is expected to provide a bump in the road for her relationship with Peter Barlow.

Some fans online have speculated that show newcomers like Ray Crosby or Scott Emberton could be the mystery person in question. However, in a chat with Digital Spy and other media this week, MacLeod ruled this out.

“I can tell you for sure that it’s not Ray or Scott – it’s somebody we have yet to meet,” MacLeod explained.

“It pertains to the time when she went missing during her mental health crisis. We wanted to revisit that at a point when Carla feels like she is back on an even keel psychologically, and now fill in the blanks.

“We don’t know precisely what she got up to when she was away. We saw glimpses of it with the hotel and the squat, but we don’t really know what happened.

“It felt like an interesting opportunity to delve into her recent story and generate something in the present, which will also reveal something we hadn’t known previously about somebody else in the show.

“We meet two people we’ve not seen before, who emerges from Carla’s mental health story. In the present, somebody that’s currently in the show elsewhere reveals their true colors. That’s a bit cryptic, but I don’t want to give too much away. “

On the subsequent challenge ahead for Carla and Peter, MacLeod continued: “Peter and Carla are the Burton and Taylor of the cobbles. I feel they’re at their best when they’re at their most explosive and they’ve got big, heart -rending challenges to overcome.

“Certainly this will be a tricky time for Peter and Carla. What he discovers about her lost weekend will be a hard thing for him to swallow, but ultimately he will come to love her all the more for it and be all the more proud of her for overcoming it. “

The storyline was originally due to screen in April, but will now air in June due to ITV’s current rationing of Corrie episodes.

Coronation Street currently airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
